Soft Wash vs. Pressure Wash for Siding
Lancaster County homeowners often ask whether their house needs "power washing" or "pressure washing." The more important question is whether it needs soft washing — and for most siding types, the answer is yes.
High-pressure washing — anything above 500–800 PSI on siding — can cause serious and expensive damage. On vinyl siding, it can crack panels, break seams, and drive water behind the cladding where it sits against the sheathing and breeds mold from the inside out. On wood or painted surfaces, it strips paint, raises the grain, and creates moisture pathways that accelerate rot. On stucco, aggressive pressure can chip the finish coat or open hairline cracks.
Soft washing solves this problem entirely. We apply a biodegradable cleaning solution at low pressure — typically under 150 PSI — that attacks mold, algae, and mildew at the cellular level. The organisms die and release from the surface, then we rinse gently. Because the biology is treated rather than just blasted off, results last significantly longer than a straight pressure wash.
The distinction matters especially in Lancaster County, where humid summers, dense tree canopy in neighborhoods like Lititz and Ephrata, and older housing stock create ideal conditions for algae and mold to establish quickly. A high-pressure wash might look clean for a few months; a proper soft wash keeps your home looking clean for 2–3 years.
